Tips on Storing Your Tools
A well organized storage is essential if you want to easily find what you are looking for. When you can find what you need quickly and easily, home projects become that much easier.
The first thing you should do is make sure you have a good single storage place delegated for your tools. Don’t have them lying all over the place or in several places around the home. That way you can pretty much guarantee the one tool you need will be hard to find – I think we’ve all been there
So put all of your tools in one location. Figure out how much space you will need and then start cleaning out the junk to make room.
Next you want to gather all the various parts of your tools. Find the cords, nails, screws and anything else that goes with the tools. If you want, you can put each tool and all the parts that go with it in a special bag. This way everything will stay organized and together.
If the items are small you can store them in plastic bins. If you have a lot of tools you will have to take things a step further and organize according to the type of tool it is. Next you want to clean the tools. You don’t want to store tools that have dirt and grim all over them. The dirt can erode the equipment and cause it not to work properly. So before you store the tools take the time to clean them.
If you have power tools lubricate the moving parts. If anything is loose, repair it. If your power tools use oil, clean it out. If a blade is dull sharpen it before you store the tool. Now that you have everything cleaned and ready to be stored, its time to get everything in place.
If you haven’t already, now is the time to set up the racks. Place storage racks along the wall of your storage unit. The racks give you a place to hang your garden tools. Roll cords up before hanging them on the rack. Always hang a tool by its handle and not by the cord.
It’s a good idea to label everything so you know exactly where it belongs. If you still have user manuals, place them all in a bin. This way you can easily refer to them if you need help. If you can, store them alphabetically. Also make sure they are in a dry area so they won’t be destroyed by rain. If you want to take it a step further you can even type up a table of contents listing all the manuals you have.
