Top 3 Tips for Choosing a Great Outdoor Storage Bench
Outdoor storage benches (also known as deck boxes) provide the perfect place to keep your yard or DIY tools safe and secure. A outdoor storage bench is a great choice especially when your shed may already be full. Or perhaps you don’t have quite enough tools to justify purchasing a shed but you still want somewhere they will be safe and orderly. There is however a range of outdoor storage benches on the market and so I’ve put together these top three tips to show you what to look for when you are buying one.
Tip One: Consider space
Firstly consider what you will be putting in the outdoor storage bench. You need to know how much internal space you require for your tools. You can either estimate the amount of space you might require by piling your tools and measuring by eye. Or alternatively if you have a cardboard box you can pile your tools in and use this is a way of estimating the space. Whichever approach you take, don’t be too casual about this.
The whole idea of buying a outdoor storage bench is that it will be able to store all your tools so having enough space is crucial. The internal space will be measured in either cubic feet or metres depending on your location. So make some measurements and get an accurate picture of the amount of space you need. Also you need to think ahead. Over time you are likely to accumulate more tools and so it is better to choose a outdoor storage bench that is slightly larger than you need right now.
You will also want to think about the shape of the outdoor storage bench before you purchase it. Have a look at your tools. If you have longer tools like spades or rakes then you are going to need a long outdoor storage bench which will be able to accommodate them. If you are going to be storing bags of soil then you will want a deeper outdoor storage bench. Again it’s all about thinking of the end use.
Tip two: Make sure it’s secure
One of the main reasons people buy outdoor storage benches is to stop thieves. Not only this you may wish to store hazardous chemicals that are a real danger to your children and pets. That why having a securely locked outdoor storage bench can be very important.
The quality of the lock will depend largely on its purpose. If you are mainly interested in stopping kids and pets from getting in then a simple lock will probably do the trick. However if you are storing more valuable power tools in the outdoor storage bench you are going to want something a little more secure.
Tip Three: Plastic vs. Wood
Outdoor storage benches are made out of two types of material plastic or wood. You should look for plastic outdoor storage benches that have double walled construction as this will make them a lot stronger and durable. This plastic is will not crack and so is worth the additional cost, as it is highly unlikely you will ever have to replace these outdoor storage benches.
Some people prefer timber outdoor storage benches. These can often fit better in with the aesthetics of a timber deck and they can be very solidly constructed. There is a problem of water tightness however and so you maybe better off with a plastic outdoor storage bench if you are storing power tools.
Making the right decision about which outdoor storage bench to buy requires thinking about its end purpose before you make your decision. Think about how secure you need it to be, what you will be storing in it and what you would like it to be constructed out of.
