What to Look for in a Deck Box
Most people probably have no idea what a deck box is. And just in case you are one of them, let me quickly give you the basics of what a deck box is and does. A deck box basically provides you with the storage you need for your yard or patio. And if you need it to, it can act as a seat for your guests.
When it comes to choosing a deck box there are a few things you should do. First figure out what you want to place in the box. Knowing what you want to store in the deck box will help you determine what size you need. When looking at size make sure you use the interior dimensions.
A deck box is really great for outdoor areas that aren’t completely enclosed. Most boxes are made of plastic and will therefore not rust. It is also designed to shed water so it won’t be destroyed when it rains.
Another thing you want to look for is who manufacturers the box. We all know that certain manufacturers are known to produce great products. In this case Suncast and Rubbermaid are the best options. You can often times find Suncast deck boxes in a neutral color. They are made of molded plastic but resemble that of a wooden box. And while no one would actually think they were wood, they do have a nice, classic design that will spruce up your front porch.
Rubbermaid decks on the other hand look like large plastic storage chests. They mostly come two tone and have a different color lid. However, the details aren’t as precise as the Suncast models. Either way, both brands are well constructed and will get the job done. The main difference between them is aesthetics and function.
So what should you store in a deck box? Truth be told you can store just about anything. Toys, patio items, yard tools and even athletic equipment for the kids. Many homeowners use the deck box to protect items that can be easily damanged by the sun.
However, certain things such as cushions should not be stored in the box. Anything that can be damaged by insects should not be put in the box. Most deck boxes are not sealed airtight which means bugs and other insects can get in and destroy your belongings. So watch what you put in there.
